Galway County and City Enterprise Board Get Networking

The Galway County and City Enterprise Board (GCCEB) is pleased to announce the first of a series of Networking sessions for entrepreneurs and start-up companies in Galway city and county. The Networking sessions will focus on the Technology /I.T. (Tech); Food Processing and Craft sectors and will commence on April 17th.

CEO of the GCCEB, Breda Fox said: “Clients have given us feedback that there is a need for networking opportunities for the types of businesses we support and hope to support in the future. We believe that these Networks present an ideal mechanism to help entrepreneurs and start-up businesses with peer to peer learning and sharing their experiences”.

 

Lane closures to affect Font & Morris roundabouts.

Roadwork’s are to commence on the Bothar na dTreabh (N6) Multi-Modal Corridor as part of the N6 Improvement Scheme. The major road works will occur at Font and Morris Roundabouts begin on Monday 20th February, 2012. It is expected that the works will last about 12 weeks.

They are being undertaken to facilitate members of the public mainly pedestrians and cyclists however residents' complaints against the proposed action when unheard late last year. Calls to fix other traffic issues around the area where ignored last November by Councilors. The roundabout functioned extremely well however failed during peak traffic times. Replacing all the roundabouts made little sense as traffic lights are far more dangerous and also need to be maintained annually.

 

Google adds Ireland to Software Grant scheme

Google has announced that it is to provide free access grants for its professional version of Google SketchUp Pro K-12 to primary and secondary schools throughout Ireland.

Google SketchUp is an amazing 3D modeling application that can be linked up with Google Earth. You can create models of historical landmarks, businesses, buildings, cars, plants, furniture and even virtual worlds on your computer. By combining it with Google Earth's global positioning, selecting a location and adding amateur photography, Galway students will be able to create and add to a 3D Galway experience on Google Earth.

 

Between 55-65% of Householders will not pay Household Charges as large protest is set for this Saturday 24th March.

Latest reports suggest less than 30% of House Holders have availed of registration of the new Household Charge. The Household Charge is an annual charge introduced by the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 which is payable by owners of residential property. It is a matter for owners of residential properties to register and pay the Household Charge on or after the 1st of January 2012. There is a National Rally of the "Don't Pay the Household Charge" Campaign on Saturday, March 24th in all major cities including Galway.

Late fees will apply after the March 31st deadline. On summary conviction a fine of 100 Euro can be imposed while the Government Authority can apply a 10 Euro Late fee and 1% interest per month thereafter. A 20 Euro Late fee will be required after one year and 30 Euro Late fee after 12 months again with a 1% interest fee per month.

With almost 440,000 people on the live register, it would be hard not to know someone how is looking for a job. With the Government lagging behind its good to know there’s a group of people and more importantly companies out there with a new jobs initiative.

Hireland a new website, combining web site design and hosting, a bit of programming and a lot of marketing, this simple idea of a central database online where employers can post jobs with no cost, is making headway trying to get people back to work. 

It all started on a wet night last February 24th by a group of friends sitting around a kitchen devastated to be discussing yet another set of friends facing emigration due to unemployment.
